Zandvoort delivered another classic qualifying session, and this time it was Lando Norris who emerged victorious. The McLaren driver produced a stunning final lap to secure pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix, edging out Mercedes duo George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. His time of 1:11.263 was enough to silence critics after a difficult sprint race earlier in the day.
Norris had been vocal about his car's lack of pace in slow-speed corners, but when it mattered most, he found something extra. He described the lap as "the best of my life," a statement that underscores his determination to stay in the title fight. This is Norris's 18th career pole and his second at Zandvoort, a circuit where McLaren has enjoyed recent success.
The qualifying session was not without drama. Rain threatened to disrupt proceedings, forcing teams to make quick decisions. Antonelli briefly topped the timesheets as light rain began to fall, but Norris saved his best for last, improving on his earlier benchmark to snatch pole. Russell settled for second, while Antonelli had to be content with third. Oscar Piastri took fourth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen, racing in front of his home crowd, could only manage seventh for Red Bull.
Sprint Race: Russell in Command
Earlier, George Russell had dominated the sprint race, leading from start to finish after starting from pole. It was his third sprint win of the season, a much-needed boost after a series of disappointing results. Russell remains confident in his title chances, despite trailing teammate Kimi Antonelli by 56 points in the standings.
With the main race set for Sunday, all eyes will be on the weather and strategy. But one thing is clear: Norris and McLaren are ready to challenge Mercedes head-on, and the Dutch Grand Prix promises to be a thriller.
