Richard Wood Johnson, better known as Woody Johnson, has officially acquired a minority stake in the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. The American billionaire, who owns the NFL's New York Jets, will also join the board as vice chairman with immediate effect.
Johnson is a heavyweight in the sports world. He has owned the Jets since 2000 and last year expanded his portfolio by taking a significant share in Premier League club Crystal Palace. Beyond sports, his family controls Johnson & Johnson, a pharmaceutical and biotech giant valued at an estimated $20.5 billion.
The exact percentage of his stake remains undisclosed, but the move adds another high-profile investor to Aston Martin's roster. Lawrence Stroll's Yew Tree Consortium retains a 33% share, followed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) with 20%. The remaining shares are held by Ernesto Bertarelli, Geely, Mercedes, and Lucid Group.

Johnson's connection to Aston Martin runs deep. As US Ambassador to the UK from 2017 to 2021, he developed an appreciation for the brand. In a statement, he praised Lawrence Stroll's vision and expressed excitement about helping the team compete at the highest level. He also highlighted a shared goal of growing F1's fanbase in the United States.
Stroll welcomed Johnson warmly, saying his experience, passion, and investment strengthen the team as they enter the next phase of their competitive journey. He called Johnson an ideal partner given his understanding of the brand and commitment to innovation.
With Johnson on board, Aston Martin is intensifying its push to close the gap on the front-runners. The influx of capital, political connections, and sports business acumen could accelerate the Silverstone-based team's transformation, especially with the new F1 technical regulations looming in 2026.
