ZANDVOORT — Toto Wolff has revealed that Mercedes is not in a financial position to develop its Formula 1 car as aggressively as its rivals. The statement comes amid a fierce battle towards the end of the 2026 season, with the German team currently leading the standings.
Throughout this season, Mercedes has been the dominant force, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli leading the Drivers' championship and extending their lead in the Constructors' standings. However, Ferrari and McLaren have been closing in, with two wins each, including Lando Norris's second victory at Zandvoort last weekend.
Wolff, speaking after the race in the Netherlands, expressed a concerning view. "We haven't got the money to put developments on the car," he told media, including Motorsport Week. "I said it before [that] we are trying to evenly split that through the season, based on our calculations of when we can bring the biggest updates and optimising the championship points. We just can't do what we can't do."
When asked why Mercedes, a team that dominated the 2014-2021 regulations cycle, appears to lack financial clout compared to others, Wolff explained that initial development spending was not excessive. "I don't think so. I just think we're an organisation that has a certain size and infrastructure. We had a really quick car, but we left between 50 and 100 points on the table with reliability issues. That would have given us a little bit more of a gap than we have today," he said.
Wolff stressed that the team will continue to execute its plan despite financial constraints. "We're just continuing to execute what the plan was and what the financial realities mean for us," he added. He also hinted that other teams might have different spending strategies, with some spending more early and mid-season, while others save for the end.
This statement follows Lewis Hamilton's call for 'offline' talks with Ferrari after a strategy blunder at Zandvoort. The situation adds another layer to the season's finale, where every development could be decisive. With acknowledged financial limits, Mercedes must ensure that any upgrades they bring are truly effective to maintain their advantage.
