Mercedes Admits Grid Penalties Almost Certain for Antonelli and Russell TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Mercedes F1 penalty incoming for Antonelli and Russell

Mercedes has admitted that grid penalties are almost guaranteed for both Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell heading into the second half of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The new regulations have sparked a rise in reliability issues across the grid, and for Mercedes, this poses a serious threat to their championship-contending pair.

Despite making significant progress in addressing power unit concerns, the damage to existing components is irreversible. Antonelli, currently leading the drivers' championship, has exhausted the maximum allocation for several components, setting him up for a costly grid drop when F1 resumes. Russell, in a slightly better position, still faces the likelihood of needing additional parts as the season progresses.

Deputy team principal Bradley Lord acknowledged the situation is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid. "Looking at how many we've used in the first half of the season, I think it's almost inevitable that, at some point, there will be penalties to take," he said. "That's something the strategy team and the guys in Brixworth will work to figure out the optimum route." Lord detailed the component usage: "Kimi's on his fourth set of bits, so the next ones incur penalties, and George is on his third. The probabilities and the maths would suggest that both will need to take a form of penalty; size to be determined!"

Strategic Penalty Decisions at Mercedes

Importantly, Mercedes is acutely aware of the penalty situation and is working strategically to find the best weekend to serve the inevitable grid drop. Toto Wolff cited Monza as a potential venue for Antonelli to take a penalty. "We need to decide when that is," Wolff explained. "When we need to take one, and which tracks – there could be one that can be very special for Kimi, but on paper looks like a good place to take an engine penalty."

Wolff even joked about sending Antonelli to the back of the grid at his home race to manage pressure. "So we need to speak to Marco [Antonelli's father] whether we want to take an engine penalty in Monza! We'll take the pressure off in Monza by starting him from the back!" he said. "Our reliability has just not been good. Whether we take a penalty or not, we shall see."

Mercedes Believes F1 Reliability Concerns Are Over

Mercedes' reliability struggles have continued throughout 2026, with both Russell and Antonelli suffering costly problems. Russell has faced battery, harvesting, gearbox, and water-leak issues, all playing a significant role in his title charge. Meanwhile, championship leader Antonelli endured a costly battery failure while chasing a strong result at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Lord admits the season has been far from ideal despite the team's strong form. "On the chassis side, it's been different things: the wheel shield in Silverstone, other elements elsewhere. So yeah, there's been a number of different elements for us to get on top of," he highlighted. Crucially, the team believe their reliability concerns are behind them. "Initially, we had some challenges with the ERS and the whole SME pack, which were closely related issues responsible for the failures in Canada and Barcelona. We believe they are, for the most part, resolved with the reliability update we brought to Austria," Lord explained.

Mercedes currently sits at the top of the Constructors' standings, 72 points ahead of Ferrari. But with impending grid penalties, they may be inviting rivals to catch up, setting the stage for an enthralling race to the end in 2026.
