Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has urged the FIA and Formula 1 to review the current regulations after describing the Australian Grand Prix as “chaos”. The Red Bull driver delivered the criticism after experiencing the new technical era of the championship for the first time in race conditions at Albert Park.

Verstappen started the race from 20th on the grid following a crash in qualifying but managed to recover to sixth place by the chequered flag. Despite the strong comeback, the four-time world champion questioned the racing dynamics created by the new power unit regulations, which split performance between combustion power and electrical energy.

The Dutch driver had already raised concerns when the regulations were first proposed several years ago, warning that Formula 1 risked becoming overly dependent on battery management. After the race in Melbourne, Verstappen reiterated his view that the current format requires careful evaluation to ensure the sport maintains its traditional racing characteristics.

“Chaos… honestly I don’t really have the right words for it,” Verstappen said.

“For me, I passed a lot of cars because we were about two seconds a lap faster, but it’s difficult to describe how the race actually unfolded.”

Verstappen stressed that attention should focus on the rules governing the new generation of cars. He hopes discussions between drivers, the FIA, and Formula 1 can lead to improvements even during the current season.

“They ask questions and I give my opinion about what I would like to see and what I think is better for the sport,” he explained.

“I care about the sport, I love racing, and I want it to be better than this.”

“Hopefully even during this year we can come up with some different solutions so it becomes more enjoyable for everyone.”

The Red Bull driver also suggested that his long-term future in Formula 1 could depend on how the sport evolves under the new rules, adding that many people within the paddock share similar concerns.

“I love racing, but you can only take so much,” Verstappen added.

“I think the FIA and Formula 1 are willing to listen, but I just hope there will be some action.”

“We want the best for the sport. We’re not critical just to be critical. We want Formula 1 to be proper Formula 1 on steroids.”

Verstappen also revealed a technical issue that compromised his race start. According to the Dutchman, the battery in his car unexpectedly drained during the formation lap, leaving him without power when the race began.

“I had no battery,” he said.

“Somehow on the formation lap it drained everything, so when I launched I had zero battery and basically no power.”

Despite the setback, Verstappen managed to progress through the midfield before settling into a rhythm later in the race. However, he noted that tyre degradation and graining on the hard compound proved higher than expected, while the medium tyre appeared to be the more effective option at Albert Park.

The result leaves Verstappen facing an early deficit in the championship standings, while the debate over the impact of Formula 1’s new technical regulations is likely to continue ahead of the next round of the 2026 season.
