Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has insisted he does not want to leave Formula 1 despite ongoing frustration with the new power unit regulations. The Red Bull Racing driver also confirmed that discussions with the FIA and Formula 1 are currently underway to explore possible improvements.

Since the official shakedown test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in late January, Verstappen has been among the most outspoken critics of the new generation of F1 cars. During the Barcelona test he compared the machinery to “Formula E on steroids,” highlighting his concerns about the driving experience under the revised technical framework.

The criticism continued during the season-opening race weekend in Australia, where Verstappen admitted that driving the new car left him feeling “completely empty.” His comments raised questions about his long-term future in the championship, particularly as the sport enters a new technical era.

Speculation intensified further when it was confirmed that Verstappen will make his debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race later this May. However, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has maintained that the Dutch driver has no intention of leaving the sport.

“Yeah, I don’t really want to leave. Like I said, I wish I had a bit more fun, for sure. But I’m also doing other stuff that is a lot of fun.”

Verstappen explained that additional motorsport activities outside Formula 1 provide him with opportunities to enjoy different forms of racing while maintaining his involvement in the championship.

“I get to race the Nordschleife, and I hope in the coming years I can do Spa-Francorchamps, hopefully Le Mans as well. So I’m combining different things to find other activities that I really enjoy.”

The four-time world champion also acknowledged that his current experience in Formula 1 is somewhat conflicted. While he continues to value working with his team, he admits the driving experience itself has not been as enjoyable as in previous seasons.

“At the same time it’s a bit conflicting, because I don’t really enjoy driving the car, but I do enjoy working with all the people in the team and the engine department as well.”

Verstappen confirmed that he has already discussed his concerns with both Formula 1 management and the FIA, with efforts ongoing to address the issues raised by drivers.

“I’ve had discussions with F1 and the FIA, and I think we are working towards something hopefully, and hopefully that will improve everything.”

As the championship heads to the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit, Verstappen remains focused on continuing the season while hoping that future adjustments to the regulations can improve the overall driving experience in Formula 1.
