In a shocking turn of events, Maffi Racing has withdrawn all four cars from the final race of the Brno weekend and the remaining round at the Hungaroring in the Formula 4 Central European Zone (CEZ) championship. The Swiss team cited dissatisfaction with decisions made by scrutineers and stewards, calling them inconsistent with technical and sporting regulations.
The frustration had been brewing since August at Most, where team principal Danny Maffi voiced concerns and threatened withdrawal if matters weren't resolved. Unfortunately, events at Brno proved to be the final straw. Maffi described an "accumulation of decisions taken since the beginning of the championship which were not consistent with the technical and sporting regulations in our assessment."
In a statement, Maffi emphasized that the team only sought fairness and transparency. They even requested their own cars to be scrutinized whenever they were on top as a matter of principle. "During Race 2, our team identified a serious technical non-conformity concerning cars from another team. We submitted a formal protest with supporting documentation. However, we were extremely disappointed with how the matter was handled, while attention was instead turned towards my car. My exhaust was later confirmed to be original and compliant," Walther explained. "For us, this became about fairness, equal treatment and the integrity of the championship. Despite having a genuine chance to fight for the title, we made the difficult decision not to start the final and to step away from the championship."
Walther added that the team has documented what happened and submitted the relevant information to the appropriate authorities. "We came here to race. We came here to win. But we will never accept winning at the cost of fairness. This is bigger than racing," he stated.
Maffi Racing's withdrawal is a blow to the F4 CEZ series. The team is known as one of the front-runners and has nurtured many talented drivers. This decision also raises questions about the consistency of officiating in the championship. Will it affect the trust of other teams? Only time will tell.
With Maffi Racing's exit, the title fight in F4 CEZ this season is guaranteed to change. Walther must put his ambitions on hold, at least for now. However, for Maffi and his team, integrity remains paramount. "For Maffi Racing, integrity will always be worth more than a trophy," the team concluded.
