Lucas di Grassi has confirmed that the 2026 season will mark the end of his professional racing career, with the announcement made ahead of the Formula E Berlin double-header. The 41-year-old clarified that his decision covers a complete withdrawal from competitive motorsport, not solely his involvement in the all-electric championship.
Across his career, di Grassi has competed in multiple top-tier categories, including Formula 1 with Virgin Racing in 2010, as well as the World Endurance Championship and Formula E. He is widely regarded as one of the foundational figures of Formula E, playing a central role in shaping the series’ early technical direction and competitive identity.
The timing of his retirement aligns with the conclusion of the Gen3 era in Formula E, which represents a significant regulatory transition for the championship. Di Grassi described this moment as the natural end of a cycle, positioning it as an appropriate point to step away from driving while the series prepares for its next phase of technical evolution.

Currently racing for Lola, di Grassi indicated that his future contribution to the team and the wider motorsport landscape may be more impactful outside the cockpit. His focus is shifting toward broader responsibilities, potentially involving team development, strategic direction, or championship growth initiatives.
Statistically, di Grassi concludes his driving career as one of Formula E’s most accomplished competitors, with one drivers’ title, 13 race victories, 41 podium finishes, and a total of 1,077 points. These achievements place him among the most influential drivers in the history of the series.
Despite the impending retirement, he still has 11 races remaining and remains focused on delivering competitive results. Among his personal ambitions is the prospect of ending his career on a high note, ideally with a strong performance or podium finish at the season finale in London, while acknowledging the realistic limitations of current competitiveness.
Di Grassi’s transition reflects a broader trend within modern motorsport, where experienced drivers increasingly move into strategic and developmental roles. His departure from active competition also marks a generational shift within Formula E as it prepares to enter a new regulatory era.
As the 2026 season concludes, attention will turn to di Grassi’s next chapter, while Formula E continues its evolution into the next phase of its global and technical development.
