Mark Cavendish has officially been named the official starter for the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours. The honour has been awarded by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest to one of the most successful athletes in modern cycling history.
Cavendish is widely regarded as one of the greatest sprinters in Tour de France history. The British rider, famously nicknamed the “Manx Missile,” currently holds the all-time record for most Tour de France stage victories with 35 wins, surpassing legendary cyclist Eddy Merckx.
Beyond his road racing success, Cavendish also achieved major accomplishments on the track with three world championship gold medals in the madison discipline. However, his global reputation was primarily built through his dominance in sprint finishes across cycling’s biggest grand tours.

During the 2024 Tour de France, Cavendish finally broke the long-standing stage win record previously held by Merckx for decades. He also collected 17 Giro d’Italia stage victories and three stage wins at the Vuelta a España throughout his professional career.
This year’s Le Mans 24 Hours will take place on June 13-14 and marks the 94th edition of the legendary endurance race at Circuit de la Sarthe. As official starter, Cavendish will wave the flag to officially begin the race.
In its official announcement, the Le Mans 24 Hours account described Cavendish as “the ultimate sprinter for the ultimate race.” Organisers also stated that Cavendish’s competitive spirit perfectly reflects the philosophy of Le Mans and its relentless pursuit of performance.
“France and I go back a long way. The Tour de France taught me everything about pain, glory, and pushing your limits,” Cavendish said.
“Some competitions transcend their own discipline and belong to sports fans everywhere. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of those events. It’s a temple of sport, and I’m excited to experience the start from the inside,” he added.
Automobile Club de l'Ouest president Pierre Fillon described Cavendish as a highly deserving choice for the honour, praising the British rider for representing the performance and passion that have always defined Le Mans.
In recent years, the Le Mans 24 Hours has regularly selected major sporting and entertainment figures as official starters for the race. Previous names include Roger Federer, Zinedine Zidane, LeBron James, Rafael Nadal, and Brad Pitt.
Cavendish’s appointment also highlights Le Mans’ continued efforts to strengthen its global appeal by connecting endurance racing with internationally recognised sporting icons from multiple disciplines.
