Liam Lawson is set to make a sensational return to Red Bull Racing for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, replacing the injured Isack Hadjar. This marks a historic moment: Lawson becomes the first driver ever to be dropped from the Red Bull seat and then win it back.
Lawson's F1 journey has been anything but straightforward. Promoted to replace Sergio Perez in early 2025 with just 11 Grand Prix starts under his belt, he struggled massively in the first two rounds in Australia and China. A mechanical issue hampered his practice time, and a crash in the wet race in Melbourne didn't help. After China, he was quickly replaced by Yuki Tsunoda and sent back to Racing Bulls.
Now, Lawson has rebuilt his career impressively. In the first half of 2026, he sits ninth in the drivers' standings with 43 points, including a best finish of sixth in Monaco and Silverstone. He is currently the highest-placed driver from outside the big four teams (Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull), proving his consistency and earning another shot at the top team.

This decision triggers a musical chairs of drivers: Tsunoda moves to Racing Bulls to replace Lawson, while Arvid Lindblad steps up to the senior team. It's a familiar cycle for Red Bull, where the second seat is always under scrutiny.
With the RB22 expected to be competitive at the front, Lawson has a golden opportunity to become the first New Zealander to score a podium since Denny Hulme's second place at the 1974 Austrian GP, 913 races ago. Can he seize this second chance? We'll find out at Zandvoort.
