The speculation surrounding Josh Pierson and his anticipated graduation to top-tier American single-seater racing has finally reached its conclusion. AJ Foyt Racing officially announced that the young American driver will join their competitive driver lineup for the upcoming IndyCar campaign in 2027, marking a major milestone in his motorsport career.
Pierson's journey to the premier series was built upon years of diverse motorsport experience. His four-year tenure in the Indy Nxt championship featured a challenging path without race wins or pole positions until a breakthrough performance during the final two weeks of the season. He secured back-to-back poles at the Milwaukee Mile and Laguna Seca, successfully converting the latter appearance into his maiden victory in the category.
Although a retirement in the season finale left him 11th in the championship standings, his late-season surge caught the attention of team leadership. Larry Foyt and his squad previously evaluated Pierson in tests utilizing a previous-generation Indy car before advancing him to a contemporary chassis on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course to satisfy strict series licensing requirements.
"Racing in IndyCar has been my dream for as long as I can remember," expressed the 20-year-old driver. He emphasized that every competitive discipline he has tackled over the years served as crucial preparation for this massive career breakthrough. "The variety of racing I’ve done has all been in preparation for this incredible opportunity. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way."
Prior to locking down his full-time seat, Pierson built an extensive racing resume across multiple disciplines. After starting his single-seater career in F1600 and USF2000, he transitioned to sportscar racing where he became the youngest driver ever to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours at age 16, alongside securing impressive LMP2 class victories and podium finishes in both the World Endurance Championship and IMSA.
Reflecting on the team's newest signing, AJ Foyt team management praised the young driver's unique background. Team leadership highlighted that very few drivers at his age possess such depth of global experience, complemented by a remarkable level of maturity and professional work ethic.
