MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia provided key insight into the shifting competitive balance between Ducati and Aprilia Racing following the 2026 United States MotoGP Sprint.

The Sprint at the Circuit of the Americas highlighted a notable change in performance dynamics, as Martin overtook Bagnaia on the final lap to secure his first victory aboard the Aprilia RS-GP. His decision to run the medium rear tyre proved decisive, allowing him to maintain stronger pace in the closing stages compared to rivals.

During a recorded conversation on the way to the podium, Martin directly pointed to what he believes is a key weakness in Ducati’s current package, particularly in an area where the Italian manufacturer has historically excelled.

“You’ve lost something now… especially in aero, you can see it.”

The comment reflects a growing perception that Ducati no longer holds the same aerodynamic advantage that defined its dominance in previous seasons. At the same time, Aprilia appears to have closed that gap while making gains in other performance areas.

Bagnaia did not immediately respond to the aero criticism, but later acknowledged the clear progress made by Aprilia, particularly under braking conditions.

“You guys have improved your braking loads, you’re really strong now.”

This assessment is supported by race data, which showed Martin consistently reducing the gap in the final laps. His ability to carry speed into braking zones was crucial in executing the decisive overtake, especially in technical sections such as Turn 12 at COTA.

From a technical perspective, Aprilia’s braking improvement suggests advancements in chassis balance and load distribution, enabling riders to brake later while maintaining stability on corner entry. This has become a key performance differentiator under current MotoGP conditions.

In contrast, Ducati continues to face challenges with tyre degradation, particularly towards the end of race distance. Bagnaia once again struggled in the latter stages of Sunday’s grand prix, dropping from fifth to tenth as tyre performance declined.

Meanwhile, Martin followed up his Sprint victory with a second-place finish behind team-mate Marco Bezzecchi, who currently leads the championship standings. Aprilia’s consistency across varying conditions indicates that it now possesses a more complete and competitive package.

KTM rider Pedro Acosta was also part of the Sprint podium conversation, although he was later penalised for tyre pressure. He responded strongly in the grand prix, reinforcing his presence in the front group.

During the exchange, Martin also highlighted his approach by referencing Bezzecchi’s performance as a benchmark.

“What Bez does, I do. He’s really strong.”

This underlines the importance of consistency in the title fight, where small performance gains can have a decisive impact over a full race distance. With the championship standings remaining tightly contested, technical execution and strategic decisions are becoming increasingly critical.

Heading into the next round at Jerez, attention will focus on Ducati’s response to these emerging challenges. Whether the manufacturer can regain its technical edge, or if Aprilia will continue to build momentum, will play a defining role in shaping the trajectory of the 2026 MotoGP title battle.
