Rally, Sportrik Media - Jari-Matti Latvala suffered an early retirement at Rally Costa Smeralda 2026 in Sardinia after a crash on the opening special stage halted his dominant run this season.
The Finnish driver arrived in Sardinia carrying significant momentum in the European Historic Championship, having secured six consecutive victories dating back to the end of last season. Those wins included events in Greece, Asturias, and Portugal, before extending his form into 2026 with victories in a national rally in Finland and the season-opening Rally Costa Brava in Spain, where he established a commanding margin over his closest competitors.
However, the high-speed and technical nature of the Sardinian stages presented a different challenge. On the opening Aratena special stage, Latvala and co-driver Topi Luhtinen lost control of the car through a fast corner. The incident forced them out of the rally immediately, with the car coming to rest in a position that temporarily blocked the stage, leading to a suspension of the run.

“Unfortunately, our rally ended prematurely on the first special stage when we lost control of the car in a high-speed corner. Fortunately, we are both fine and will now focus on repairing the car and returning to competition as soon as possible,” Latvala stated in his official communication.
From a championship perspective, the retirement has a direct impact on points accumulation in the European Historic Championship. The series demands consistency across mixed surfaces, including gravel and asphalt, meaning a non-finish significantly affects title contention and opens opportunities for rivals to close the gap.
Latvala’s prior dominance has been built not only on outright pace but also on refined technical management of historic machinery across varying conditions. At Rally Costa Brava, he secured victory with a margin exceeding four minutes, underlining his ability to balance performance and reliability over extended rally distances.
In parallel with his driving commitments, Latvala continues to serve as team principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing in the FIA World Rally Championship. This dual role reflects his deep technical expertise and strategic involvement at the highest level of the sport.
The Sardinia setback reshapes the competitive landscape of the championship. With several rounds remaining, attention now shifts to Latvala’s recovery and response in upcoming events, where consistency will be critical in sustaining his title challenge.
