George Russell is back in the F1 2026 title conversation after significantly reducing his deficit to Kimi Antonelli with a podium finish at the British Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver endured a difficult race at Silverstone after a slow puncture forced him into an unscheduled pit stop. That dropped him to seventh and initially appeared to end his hopes of securing a strong result.
Russell’s momentum changed in the closing stages. Kimi Antonelli suffered a wheel shield failure and received a five-second penalty for track limits, dropping the championship leader to 16th and out of the points entirely.

Max Verstappen’s crash also reshaped the front order when the late safety car was deployed. Russell stayed out while some rivals made different calls, allowing him to climb back onto the podium and finish second behind Charles Leclerc.
The result leaves Russell just 25 points behind Antonelli in the drivers’ standings. That gap had stood at 68 points after the Monaco Grand Prix, making the recent swing a major shift in championship momentum.
Silverstone became a key moment because Russell limited the damage from his own technical setback, while Antonelli failed to score at all. In championship terms, Russell’s podium combined with Antonelli’s zero points has reopened pressure within Mercedes.
Even so, Russell’s title position still depends on consistency after the British GP. If he can continue converting difficult weekends into podiums and avoid further technical losses, a 25-point gap gives him a realistic platform to keep pressuring Antonelli in the next phase of the season.
