Filling up the tank has become a luxury. Fuel prices spiked sharply in August, leaving motorcyclists without any relief in the coming months. The end of summer brings another unbearable bill for millions who depend on their vehicles daily.
Geopolitical instability and crude oil market tensions keep fuel prices at unjustifiable levels, especially during peak travel season. Amid this surge, many ask: what is the state's solution? Unfortunately, the response remains disappointing, contrasting with measures taken by other EU countries.
One standout alternative is E85 bioethanol, a blend of up to 85% plant-based alcohol with gasoline. This greener fuel is only compatible with Flex Fuel engines. France has 3,600 E85 stations at around i0.80 per liter thanks to tax incentives. Meanwhile, other markets lag far behind.
Despite proven technology, adoption in Europe is uneven. In Spain, there are only about 30 E85 pumps at i1.80 per liter, similar to standard petrol, discouraging investment. Yet manufacturers like Suzuki have demonstrated Flex Fuel reliability in India, such as the Gixxer 250, with sensors adjusting injection in real-time.
Decades of experience in South America confirm that adapting engines for Flex Fuel is cheap and efficient, as Honda and Yamaha have shown. Modifications to valve seats, fuel lines, and ECU are minor compared to consumer savings. Ironically, European markets remain closed to this option.
The government's slow response only adds pressure on riders. If they looked at other countries, the solution is already at hand. What's missing is the political will to ease the burden on the people.
