Franco Colapinto has finally addressed the controversial remarks made by British television personality Jeremy Clarkson, who joked that the Alpine driver received a grid penalty at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix due to his nationality.

The comments stirred considerable controversy at the Circuit of the Americas. Clarkson, attending the event as a guest of the Enstone-based squad, referenced his historical tensions with Argentina following the infamous Patagonia special while speaking to broadcasters.

The remarks immediately drew sharp condemnation from management, who labeled the joke as completely unacceptable. The team also issued a statement in the aftermath to distance themselves from the controversial commentary.

Addressing the media, the 23-year-old acknowledged Clarkson's reputation for joking around but maintained that the remarks were poorly chosen, emphasizing that the incident had no connection whatsoever to his racing outfit.

“I think of course it has nothing to do with the team. He just did an interview on his own, and it is nothing related to the team, and I think he's always been jokey, but I don't really know him,” Franco Colapinto told media including Motorsport Week.

Beyond the off-track headlines, the Austin weekend ended prematurely for the young driver following a multi-car incident involving his teammate Pierre Gasly and Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad, which caused severe damage to his machine.

“Pierre was coming out of the pits, and I was trying to be very defensive so Pierre could be ahead, and then three of us were side-by-side, and I got sandwiched. So I got totally damaged, but our race was not looking very good with all the traffic, so it is what it is,” he explained.

Sitting 12th in the drivers' standings with five rounds remaining in the 2026 season, the primary objective for the team is to regroup and secure reliable finishes heading into the Mexico City Grand Prix.
