Tension between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc at Ferrari is under the spotlight. Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes team management must intervene before the situation escalates further. The incident at the first corner of the Italian Grand Prix is the main trigger.
The pair battled for third place at Turn 1, and the outcome saw Hamilton forced wide and dropping to 10th. Leclerc, meanwhile, suffered a heavy crash at Parabolica on lap two, ending Ferrari's home race dramatically. Hamilton eventually finished sixth, but the team's loss was already significant.
Leclerc claimed both drivers were at fault for the clash. Hamilton, however, strongly disagreed. "There was no 'we' in it. I don't race dirty, I've always raced clean and fairly and always left space," he said. That statement further highlighted their differing views.
Montoya: Management Must Step In
Montoya, a seven-time Grand Prix winner, suggested Ferrari should not only talk with team boss Fred Vasseur but also with those above him. "They need to sit down this week in Maranello and have a proper talk. Charles said he raced Lewis like he would have raced anyone else, but it's your team-mate, and you've got to respect your team-mate and the team," Montoya told F1TV.
Vasseur acknowledged that the collision between his drivers was "not good for the team" and promised internal discussions. However, he stressed it is too early to back one driver in the title fight. Hamilton now trails Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 76 points but leads Leclerc by 36.
Hamilton believes it is "far too late" for Ferrari to give him priority after losing more ground. This situation is a major test for Vasseur to maintain team harmony while staying competitive at the front.
