Ferrari has finally broken its silence. In an unusual move, the Maranello-based team held an impromptu press call on Tuesday to express full confidence in Fred Vasseur as team principal, putting an end to the swirling speculation about his future.
The speculation was ignited by comments from former Red Bull boss Christian Horner in an interview with The Times to promote his new book. Horner said Ferrari was the only team he would be willing to join without part-ownership. That statement immediately fueled rumors that Horner could be a candidate to replace Vasseur, whose position has been under scrutiny for several races.
What made this time different was that Vasseur felt the speculation was starting to affect the team. After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he complained that the situation was "frustrating" as he kept being asked about his future, impacting the mood in the garage. "We are not working in the perfect serenity," he lamented.
Ferrari decided to take a stand. Maria Conti, Ferrari's chief communications officer, told selected media: "Ferrari's position is clear, has not changed, and Ferrari has made its choices already. We have confidence, full confidence, in Fred Vasseur and in his team, and we continue to do so." Conti emphasized that this was a time when Ferrari needed to remain "united and cohesive," which is why they wanted to kill the rumors before the next race.
Ferrari's move is unusual. F1 teams are normally reluctant to issue statements to deny media speculation, as it often only serves to further fuel rumors. In sports, especially football, a vote of confidence from the board can often signal an imminent sacking. However, Ferrari explained that it chose to go public because of the impact the rumors were having on the team and the fact that the story was getting bigger rather than fading away.
Conti said Ferrari was used to many "communication storms," such as the controversy from the launch of the Ferrari Luce electric car earlier this year. But she felt things had been getting out of control after the Azerbaijan GP. "The fact is that after the race and on Sunday and yesterday, this power of communication was increasing," she said. "Normally it is going down. Everybody - not just you guys, but also Italian media from all over the world - they are still creating a lot of different stories..."
With this statement, Ferrari hopes the team's focus can return to the track. They want to avoid the next race in Malaysia being dominated by gossip and speculation. Vasseur himself has not offered additional comments, but the public backing from management at least provides temporary calm. Now, the question remains: is this truly the end of the speculation, or just the beginning of a new chapter?
