Fernando Alonso Slams Backgrid Driving Standards After US Grand Prix Collision

Fernando Alonso launched a fierce critique against the driving standards of competitors in the lower half of the Formula 1 grid following a costly first-lap collision at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The double world champion suffered floor damage that severely compromised his Aston Martin charger for the remainder of the race after a tangle with Alex Albon.

Starting down in 12th position, the veteran Spaniard lost ground during a chaotic opening lap through the Esses. The flashpoint arrived at Turn 11 as Alonso attempted an inside move to overtake the squabbling Haas machines, only to find Albon occupying a parallel trajectory on a rapidly narrowing piece of tarmac. The Williams front-right wheel crunched directly into the left-hand bargeboard and floor edge of the AMR26.

The impact forced Alonso wide onto the outside kerb and dropped him four additional places down the order. Telemetry and on-board footage immediately revealed severe aerodynamic floor destruction, costing the car over half a second per lap in performance. Although he seriously contemplated retiring the heavily damaged machine in the garage, the team elected to bolt on a fresh front wing and send him back out to gather crucial mileage data ahead of upcoming rounds.

Voicing his sharp frustration to media representatives after crossing the line in 12th place, Alonso didn't hold back regarding the traffic management at the rear of the field. When you start at the back, there is this risk always, he stated. I think the quality of the drivers in the low third of the grid is very low. As we saw today with Alex. So I think we need to improve the car and start a little bit higher up.

Race control ultimately opted against investigating the incident, classifying it as a standard racing consequence of multiple cars fighting for identical track real estate. Albon offered his perspective on the skirmish, explaining that space became severely pinched during the complex sequence. Despite finishing outside the points with a heavily compromised chassis, Alonso's focus immediately shifted toward extracting more outright pace from his package in future qualifying sessions.
