The action at the Lusail International Circuit delivered instant drama when Fabio Di Giannantonio stormed to the top of the timesheets during Friday's practice. The Italian rider not only claimed the fastest lap of the day under the desert floodlights but also smashed the absolute track record. Despite this stellar achievement, the milestone brought mixed emotions to his garage.
The Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team rider endured a rocky start during the opening morning session, initially struggling to match the pace of the front-runners. However, a massive turnaround during the afternoon practice allowed him to unlock incredible speed. Stopping the clock at 1:50.406, he edged out rival Marc Marquez and secured the psychological upper hand heading into the weekend.
"Honestly, it has been a day of mixed feelings," Di Giannantonio reflected on his performance. "I am extremely happy with how we finished the day, the lap times we achieved, and especially the feeling with the machine. At the same time, it is slightly frustrating because we now realize that we might have made the wrong technical choices during recent Grand Prix weekends."
The breakthrough was largely credited to a renewed aerodynamic package. After experimenting with various setups following the summer break, the team finally found a configuration that provides stability across different circuit layouts. This crucial development has eliminated the constant guesswork that hindered their earlier outings.
"We now have a very solid baseline," he added. "This new aero package works efficiently under various conditions, so we will likely keep using this setup for the upcoming races."
With race pace traditionally being his strong suit at this venue, Di Giannantonio's immediate target shifts entirely to securing a front-row start during qualifying to avoid traffic in the early laps.
