Massimo Meregalli has admitted that Yamaha’s V4 MotoGP project has proven more complex than initially expected during the 2026 season. The transition from an inline-four to a V4 engine marks a significant technical shift aimed at aligning with the majority of the grid.

However, early results have highlighted the challenges of this transformation, with Yamaha scoring fewer points compared to the same stage last year. The initial phase has underlined the difficulty of adapting an entirely new engine concept within a competitive environment.

From a technical perspective, switching to a V4 configuration impacts not only engine characteristics but also weight distribution, chassis geometry, and aerodynamic integration. Achieving optimal balance across these elements requires extensive development and validation.

The struggles are also reflected in the performances of Fabio Quartararo, who has been unable to consistently challenge at the front, highlighting the current limitations of the package.

Meregalli acknowledged that unexpected challenges have slowed the development process, although he emphasised that the team continues to push forward with a positive internal environment.

"We are facing some unexpected issues that are slowing down development, but the team is working hard and maintaining a positive atmosphere."
