Zandvoort, Netherlands — The tension in the Mercedes garage peaked during the final phase of the Dutch Grand Prix. A late Virtual Safety Car (VSC) became the turning point as the team asked George Russell to yield to Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The decision instantly raised a burning question: is Russell now a clear number two driver?
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, was quick to dismiss that notion. According to him, what unfolded on the damp Zandvoort track was simply a standard team procedure to restore the original running order after Antonelli made a free pit stop under VSC. “No, these are the rules,” Wolff told Sky Sports, referring to the internal agreement between the two drivers.
The sequence of events began when Antonelli struggled with his second set of hard tyres. The team saw a golden opportunity: use the VSC to switch to softs without losing much time. However, the consequence was that the young Italian emerged from the pit lane behind Russell. So, the pit wall asked Russell to give way, a request that initially met with hesitation—the Brit pressed his radio button to question the call.
“We simply restored the original positions before Kimi’s free stop,” Wolff insisted. “This is not about hierarchy, it’s about racing logic. Kimi had a chance to attack, and we wanted to maximize the team’s result.”
The decision was certainly bold, especially since Russell was in strong form and fighting hard with his rivals. But the end result spoke for itself: Antonelli finished ahead of Russell, securing a double podium for Mercedes under pressure from Lando Norris, who won the race.
With this result, Russell now equals Lewis Hamilton’s points in the drivers’ standings, but both still trail Antonelli by 59 points, who has been remarkably consistent. This situation is certainly intriguing, especially how Mercedes manages the expectations of both drivers for the rest of the season.
Wolff stressed that such decisions are part of normal team play, as long as communication is transparent. “George is a true professional. He understands the racing context,” Wolff concluded. “We never ask one driver to sacrifice everything without a clear reason.”
