Sebastian Wheldon delivered a stunning lap to secure pole position for the Formula Regional European Championship title decider at Zandvoort. The MP Motorsport driver clocked a 1m34.271s, edging out rival Jan Przyrowski by a mere 0.064s.
The qualifying session was a thriller. Przyrowski, winner of race one, had set the benchmark at 1m34.356s before Wheldon unleashed his pace in the dying moments. "I knew I had to take the risk, and it paid off," Wheldon said. This is Wheldon's second pole of the weekend, underlining his qualifying prowess.
From Group B, Kean Nakamura-Berta of Prema Racing secured second on the grid, just 0.003s ahead of Emanuele Olivieri (R-ace GP). Olivieri will start third, alongside Przyrowski on the second row.
The championship battle intensifies. Olivieri still leads the standings, but Wheldon and Nakamura-Berta are 18 and 7 points behind, respectively. Meanwhile, Rashid Al Dhaheri, the fourth driver still in contention, will start from the seventh row after a disappointing qualifying.
Group B was initially dominated by Olivieri and Yuki Sano. However, Nakamura-Berta, who was languishing in 11th, gradually found his rhythm and eventually pipped Olivieri by 0.002s. "I just focused on the final lap, and the result was amazing," said Nakamura-Berta.
In Group A, Wheldon and Przyrowski traded fastest times. But it was Wheldon who had the final say, setting the quickest lap as the chequered flag fell. Now, all eyes turn to the title-deciding race, with four drivers still in the hunt.
The final FREC race will take place on Sunday afternoon local time. With pole in hand, can Wheldon convert it into a championship? Or will Olivieri hold on? Don't miss the action as these young talents battle it out.
