Tom Mills successfully secured a dramatic victory after withstanding race-long pressure during the second heat of the Walter Hayes Trophy. The KMR Sport driver managed to lead the race right from the start and fended off intense challenges from his closest competitors behind him.
The race action was immediately marked by high drama as Chris Middlehurst driving for Team Dolan faced major hurdles. Before the race even started, he suffered technical drama that required him to change a master cylinder on his car to make it onto the grid.
Trouble compounded for Middlehurst when a race control message on lap two stated that his transponder alongside two other drivers, Xavier Michel and Luke McShane, was not working. Consequently, a 30-second time penalty was handed down to them, which initially dropped Middlehurst from his second-place finish on the road.
Although his first appeal failed, Middlehurst told Formula Scout that he planned to lodge another appeal to secure his spot on the semi-final grid. Meanwhile, the battle at the front raged intensely with fierce overtaking maneuvers involving Mills, Rory Smith, and other contenders fighting for grip at critical corners.
Entering the closing laps, the battle reached a climax with the leading group running three-wide at the start of lap seven.
