Wayne Gardner is officially set to make his emotional return to the Phillip Island circuit for the upcoming MotoGP race weekend scheduled for October 23-25. His highly anticipated appearance comes after the former world champion openly criticized the Australian Grand Prix Corporation in 2024 and last year following previous snubs regarding event invitations.
The winner of the inaugural Australian Grand Prix in 1989 and again in 1990 will feature in the special Legends Lap display on Sunday before the main feature race. Gardner will not be riding alone, as he is joined on track by fellow motorcycle grand prix icons Casey Stoner and Mick Doohan.
Between this elite trio, they boast an impressive eight world championships. Mick Doohan secured five world titles, Casey Stoner claimed two championships, and Wayne Gardner added one prestigious crown to cement their legendary status in motorsport history.
The star-studded Legends Lap at Phillip Island will also welcome 1993 world champion Kevin Schwantz, who raced twice at the iconic seaside circuit during his illustrious Grand Prix career.
Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Travis Auld highlighted the significance of bringing these legendary figures together to celebrate the rich heritage of motorcycle racing in front of passionate fans.
"Phillip Island has played a significant role in the racing careers of Casey Stoner, Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner, and bringing all these champions together for this special celebration is something we know fans will love," said Travis Auld.
Travis Auld emphasized that these riders helped shape Australian motorcycle racing and successfully inspired generations of both competitors and fans alike. Witnessing them share the tarmac together during the Legends Lap promises an unforgettable spectacle.
Meanwhile, Casey Stoner—who completely dominated Phillip Island with six consecutive victories from 2007 through 2012—expressed his immense excitement to reconnect with the motorsport community.
"Phillip Island has given me some of the greatest memories of my career, and it’s a place that will always hold a special place in my heart," stated Casey Stoner. "I’m excited to be part of this final chapter and to share it with the fans. I know this will be a weekend we’ll remember for years to come."
