While Chaz Mostert punched his ticket to the next Finals round at Sandown with a victory, teammate Ryan Wood faces potential elimination after a turbulent Saturday shocker in the Supercars championship.

Wood started from 10th on the grid after tripping a kerb sensor in the beach chicane during a tense Top 10 Shootout session. He held his own at the back of the top 10 during the first stint of the rain-hit race before dramatically falling away in the second stint.

Wood eventually finished a lap down in 14th place and remains ninth in the overall standings, but now sits 60 points behind the critical elimination cut-line. Walkinshaw TWG was one of several teams to suspect that differences between wet tyre batches were behind the wild pace swings from stint to stint.

That exact issue was previously blamed for Todd Hazelwood’s sluggish start at The Bend 500 last month, where Walkinshaw TWG had otherwise secured a strong 1-3 finish. Addressing the sudden drop in performance, Walkinshaw TWG CEO Bruce Stewart shared his thoughts with Supercars.com post-race.

"I don’t know if it was a bad batch or something, but he just couldn’t switch the tyres on," Bruce Stewart stated. "In the second stint, pressures were in the zone and temp was pretty good. But he was a second half off what Chaz could do, and then he came out with a fresh set and cold tyres, and he was spot on."
