Maverick Vinales will miss this weekend's MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix, marking his fourth consecutive race absence due to a shoulder injury. Tech3 has confirmed that KTM test rider Pol Espargaro will once again fill the seat.
Vinales, a ten-time MotoGP race winner, has been sidelined since before the summer break. He underwent surgery on his shoulder, causing him to miss races in the USA, Spain, and France. His return failed to yield improved form, and further checks during the summer revealed an undiagnosed tear in the shoulder he injured in a crash in Germany last year. Consequently, he has been absent for the last three rounds.
Tech3 team boss Nicolas Goyon expressed full confidence in Espargaro. "It means a lot to have Pol with us for our factory's home race in Austria," he said. "Every time he gets back on the bike, he looks more comfortable and competitive, and Misano was another positive step forward. We know we can count on his experience and professionalism, and we're looking forward to seeing him race in front of the orange army this weekend. At the same time, our priority remains supporting Maverick's recovery and we hope to have him back with us as soon as possible."
In a press release, Tech3 stated they hope to have Vinales back for the Japanese Grand Prix on the first weekend of October. Espargaro has impressed as a stand-in, scoring points in three of the last four races.
Vinales's prolonged absence will do nothing to quell speculation about his future with KTM. During the summer break, reports emerged that KTM was looking to sever ties with Vinales immediately amid ongoing tensions. Vinales has made no secret of his anger at what he feels has been unfair treatment, especially with no ride secured for 2027. However, both parties have repeatedly denied these reports.
For Espargaro, this is another opportunity to showcase his abilities at a track he knows well. He will aim to maximize the RC16 package in front of the KTM faithful. Meanwhile, the team and fans hope Vinales can recover soon and return to his best form.
