Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen of Red Bull clinched back-to-back pole positions in a chaotic 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying, marking his sixth pole of the season. The nearly two-hour session at Baku City Circuit was marred by a record-breaking six red flags, with Oscar Piastri’s crash in Q3 capping a tumultuous day for Formula 1.

Sportrik’s in-depth analysis highlights Piastri’s crash at Turn 3, which triggered the sixth red flag, as a defining moment. The McLaren championship leader, pushing for a top time, lost control and hit the barriers, sustaining heavy damage and settling for ninth on the grid. This was his first major error since sliding off in wet conditions at his home race in Australia earlier this year. Meanwhile, Verstappen capitalized on the chaos to secure pole, followed by Carlos Sainz of Williams and Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls.

Qualifying Chaos and Key Incidents

The 2025 Baku qualifying ranks among F1’s most disrupted sessions. Beyond Piastri, Charles Leclerc of Scuderia Ferrari caused the fifth red flag with a Q3 crash, dropping to 10th after four consecutive Baku poles. In Q1, Alexander Albon of Williams struck a barrier at Turn 1, breaking his front suspension and starting 20th. Franco Colapinto of Alpine triggered the third Q1 red flag with a heavy crash at Turn 4, hurting his 2026 seat prospects. In Q2, Oliver Bearman of Haas clipped a wall, damaging his right-rear suspension and causing the fourth red flag.

Sportrik attributes the chaos to 20 km/h gusty winds and Baku’s narrow street circuit design. Piastri, who posted a 1:41.423 in FP3 to finish third, 0.2 seconds behind teammate Lando Norris, struggled early. In FP2, he grazed the wall at Turn 15 and received a reprimand for a yellow flag violation. In Q3, the pressure to challenge Verstappen led to a loss of grip at the slick Turn 3.

Championship Impact and Team Struggles

Piastri’s crash is a significant setback for McLaren, poised to clinch the constructors’ title in Baku. Leading the championship by 31 points over Norris, who starts seventh, Piastri faces his worst grid position of 2025. Ferrari also faltered, with Lewis Hamilton, fastest in FP2, dropping to 12th after losing 0.3 seconds in Q2 compared to Q1. Under Toto Wolff’s leadership, Ferrari struggled to maintain consistency.

Verstappen, backed by Red Bull’s pit crew and race engineer Adrian Newey’s strategies, seized the opportunity to strengthen his position. Williams and Racing Bulls, through Sainz and Lawson, delivered surprising performances to secure top grid spots.

Race Day Strategies

For the September 21, 2025, race, McLaren must prioritize repairing Piastri’s car and refining pit stop strategies. Sportrik recommends a 5% reduction in Turn 3 entry speed to avoid oversteer and aerodynamic adjustments for stability in Baku’s persistent winds. Red Bull, with Verstappen’s pole, is well-positioned to leverage the circuit’s long straights.

The record six red flags underscore Formula 1’s unpredictability. Piastri, with seven wins this season, remains a strong title contender if he can recover. McLaren, supported by its skilled pit crew, must capitalize on every opportunity to maintain its constructors’ lead with eight races left.
