Max Verstappen has identified a significant step forward in the performance of the Red Bull Racing RB22 following the introduction of a major upgrade package at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2026. The Dutch driver emphasised that the car now delivers a higher level of predictability and confidence behind the wheel.

Verstappen qualified the revised car in fifth position for the Sprint Race, remaining competitive against front-running teams such as McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Notably, he finished ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in the session.

From a technical standpoint, Verstappen described the RB22 as feeling more “together,” indicating improved balance across different phases of a lap. This enhanced cohesion allows for more consistent performance extraction, particularly in demanding conditions where precision is critical.

Despite the gains, a clear weakness remains in high-speed corners, especially in the opening sector of the Miami circuit. This limitation highlights ongoing aerodynamic challenges, particularly in maintaining stability and load consistency at higher velocities.

Quantitatively, Verstappen estimated that the performance deficit—previously exceeding one second—has now been reduced by nearly half. This suggests that the upgrade package has delivered tangible improvements, even if it has not yet restored Red Bull to the front of the field.

The development also appears to have created a gap to the midfield, providing a more stable competitive position. However, closing the remaining deficit to the leading teams will require further refinement, particularly in areas where aerodynamic efficiency is still lacking.

Driver confidence remains a critical performance factor, especially in qualifying scenarios where margins are minimal. The improved trust Verstappen now has in the RB22 is expected to support more consistent lap execution throughout the weekend.

The Miami Grand Prix will serve as a key reference point in evaluating whether Red Bull’s development direction is sufficient to sustain its recovery and re-establish itself as a front-running contender in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
