Max Verstappen has finally opened up about his decision to stay in Formula 1 until 2030. The Dutch driver revealed that a series of discussions with Formula 1 and the FIA played a crucial role in his long-term commitment to Red Bull Racing.
The surprise announcement came on Thursday morning at Zandvoort, as Verstappen and the Milton Keynes-based team confirmed the extension. Speculation about his future had been rife throughout the summer, especially after reports of approaches from McLaren. However, the four-time world champion insisted that talks with the sport's governing bodies were decisive.
Verstappen had been critical of F1's new regulations cycle, even hinting at a possible exit from the series. But in a media session at Zandvoort, he explained that discussions with F1 and the FIA have yielded small improvements for the rules, including opening the door for a potential V8 return.

"As I said before, I accept the situation we're in. Personally, I'm not happy with the new regulations. But with the discussions I've had with F1 and the FIA, we're already trying to make small improvements for next year or the year after, plus the year I signed, leaving the door open for a potential V8 return – I'm willing to accept that at the moment," Verstappen said.
Despite some lingering reservations, Verstappen reaffirmed his love for racing. "It's still a Formula 1 car, and it's still the pinnacle of motorsport. So I still want to be here," he added.
Verstappen also admitted that after the first few races of the season, he told Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies not to ask him about his future because he wasn't sure if he wanted to stay. Now, with the contract secured, that pressure has eased.
This decision is undoubtedly good news for Red Bull and F1 as a whole. With Verstappen remaining the center of attention into the next decade, the fight at the top of the standings is set to heat up even more.
