Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Ugo Ugochukwu, the former McLaren junior driver, claimed the Formula Regional Oceania Championship title after sealing the decisive result at the final round of the season at Highlands Motorsport Park.

The American driver defeated newly announced Audi junior Freddie Slater in the final standings of the four-round championship, which began in early January. The title fight highlighted the depth of emerging single-seater talent competing across the condensed Oceania campaign.

This year’s championship also marked the single-seater debut of WRC world champion Kalle Rovanpera, who used the series as part of his preparation for a full Super Formula programme later in the season. His participation further elevated the competitive profile of the championship.

From a performance standpoint, Ugochukwu emerged as the most consistent driver of the campaign, securing four race victories and adding two further podium finishes. That record proved decisive in building a points advantage that ultimately delivered the championship crown.

Although he departed the McLaren junior programme in November, Ugochukwu could not have asked for a stronger start to his 2026 racing season. His title success places him alongside previous Formula Regional Oceania champions such as Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad.

“It’s an amazing feeling to cross the line,” said Ugo Ugochukwu.
“The race felt way longer than usual, but I’m just happy to get it done and get it over with.”

He stressed that the title was the result of a collective effort throughout the season.

“It’s been a really good campaign, a really good season. I can’t thank the whole team enough,” he added.
“They did a mega job all year. I’m happier for them than for myself, and I’m very grateful for the trust they put in me this season.”

Slater finished the championship 15 points behind Ugochukwu, just one week after being announced as Audi’s first junior Formula 1 driver. The narrow margin underlined the intensity of the title battle between two drivers set to progress further up the single-seater ladder.

Both drivers will continue their 2026 campaigns in the Formula 3 Championship, with Ugochukwu joining Campos Racing and Slater set to race for Trident. The Formula Regional Oceania title provides a significant platform for Ugochukwu as he moves into the next phase of his development.
