Tony Arbolino set the pace in the second free practice session (FP2) of the Moto2 Austrian Grand Prix 2026 at the Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, on Friday (18/9). The REDS Fantic Racing rider clocked 1:33.074, edging out David Alonso from CFMOTO Inde Team by a mere 0.042 seconds.
The track was dry with an air temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and 85 percent humidity, posing a challenge for the riders. Nevertheless, Arbolino maximized grip to set his best time in the closing minutes of the session.
Alonso, a rookie this season, continues to show rapid progress. He was only 0.042 seconds behind Arbolino, followed closely by Izan Guevara from BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2 in third, just 0.095 seconds adrift.
Meanwhile, Manuel Gonzalez of LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP had to settle for fourth, 0.197 seconds off the pace. Celestino Vietti (BETA Tools SpeedRS Team) completed the top five with a gap of 0.357 seconds.
Indonesian rider Mario Suryo Aji, competing for Idemitsu Honda Team Asia, finished 20th with a time of 1:34.348, 1.274 seconds behind Arbolino. This result provides valuable preparation for Aji ahead of qualifying.
The competition in Moto2 this season is intensifying. Arbolino, who is fighting at the top of the standings, will be eager to maintain his positive momentum in Austria. However, rivals like Alonso and Guevara will not sit idly by.
The Moto2 Austrian qualifying session will take place on Saturday (19/9) local time. Will Arbolino dominate again, or will another rider steal the spotlight? We shall see on track.
