Tension filled the paddock at the Circuit of the Americas ahead of a crucial qualifying day as the FIA confirmed grid penalties for three drivers. Arvid Lindblad, Franco Colapinto, and Gabriel Bortoleto all exceeded their permitted power unit component allocations for the 2026 Formula 1 season, triggering immediate sanctions for Sunday's Grand Prix.
Lindblad was handed a five-place grid drop after Racing Bulls introduced a sixth internal combustion engine of the campaign. The regulations strictly permit only four units per season, leaving the Briton with another setback following previous engine changes earlier in the year.
Meanwhile, Alpine faced strategic decisions in their midfield battle against Racing Bulls, resulting in a 10-place grid penalty for Colapinto. The Argentine driver's car was fitted with a fourth control electronics unit, forcing him to fight from deeper down the order during Sunday's race.

Bortoleto suffered the most severe consequence among the trio after his Audi underwent extensive changes. The Brazilian received a 20-place grid penalty, forcing him to start from the back of the grid due to crucial replacements in his energy storage and control electronics units.
While Audi also introduced a new ICE, turbocharger, and exhaust set for Bortoleto, those specific components remained within the permitted seasonal allocations and did not add to his overall grid penalty tally.
