Brendan Carr finally avenged his 2025 Sunset Nationals final defeat by outdueling Shane Baxter in Supercharged Outlaws, one of the few top qualifiers to convert their speed into a race win on a punishing day at Mildura.
The action at Sunset Strip was intense, with only Dean Jamieson and Kenny Stewart managing to back up their qualifying performances. Carr, who started from a less prominent position, had to get past Lucas Woodburn in round one before eliminating top qualifier Doina Day, while Baxter beat Tony Lamanna and received a bye in round two.
“It feels unreal to get the win, especially after finishing second last year, so it is pretty special to be able to turn that result around this time,” Carr said. “The car performed really well and the whole team worked hard to keep everything running consistently, which was a big part of getting the result today. The Sunset Strip was a great place to race, and the competition was tough all weekend.”
In Gallagher Modified, Kenny Stewart successfully defended the title he won 12 months ago in Mildura. After taking top qualifying honours, Stewart beat Danny Wilson in round one and had a bye in round two, while Bill Crozier accounted for Ashley Johnson and Neil Dyson. “We came up here without really expecting a lot, because we have a half new combination in the car and thought we would have a lot more development to go — but it all seemed to come together, swapping from methanol to petrol,” Stewart said. “The car went down the track all weekend with no problems at all — it was very consistent, and we had an absolute ball all weekend.”
Dean Jamieson repeated his 2025 Sunset Nationals top qualifier and event win double in Nitro Voodoo Modified Bike, defeating Dazz Scott in the final. After a round one bye, Jamieson overcame Derryn McGregor and Jarrod Healey, while Scott beat Greg Oberti and Shane Kirby before a round three bye. “The bike was consistent; it was good from qualifying and we felt really good; we knew we were going to be at the pointy end,” Jamieson said. “Then coming into eliminations there was some really tight racing, which was really good.”
The Nitro Voodoo Competition Bike class used the Chicago Shootout format, with Cheryl ‘MsVrod’ Beddoes leading the order on a 5.73-second pass ahead of Khoury on 5.77. The pair were the only riders to come through all three shootout rounds unbeaten, and the final came down to the index. Although Beddoes was quicker with a 5.922-second pass, Khoury (5.955) was the better performer and had a much better light, leaving on a 0.133-second reaction to his rival’s 0.349 to take the win.
The hot weather in Mildura did not dampen the competitors’ spirits, and the event once again proved its reputation as one of Australia’s most challenging drag strips. With these results, the winners solidified their positions in the season standings, while others took valuable lessons for the next race.
