Max Verstappen has sent shockwaves through the paddock by admitting he seriously considered quitting Formula 1 before signing a new contract with Red Bull. The revelation comes amid fierce speculation about the Dutchman's future, with his previous deal set to expire at the end of 2028.
Verstappen's frustration with the 2026 technical regulations has been well documented. He famously labeled the new rules as "Formula E on steroids" during pre-season testing, and his criticism continued after changes were made ahead of the Miami GP to reduce the impact of super-clipping and battery depletion. In Madrid, he again highlighted issues with battery deployment.
Despite his reservations, Verstappen's love for racing ultimately kept him in the sport. "Well, either you quit or you don't – so it's a 50/50 decision!" he told Bild. "I seriously considered quitting. But ultimately, I love racing. I don't have anything left to prove; I'm a four-time world champion and achieved everything I ever wanted after my first title. I don't race for the history books, but for myself, the team, and our fans. That's why it was ultimately an easy decision."
The admission will surprise many, given Verstappen's continued competitiveness. However, he insists he is still enjoying the current regulations, even without regular race wins. "Yes. It would obviously be even more fun if I won every weekend, but the car just isn't capable of that right now," he said. "That's okay, because we're on the right track and we're a good team. A lot of people have come and gone in recent months and years, so a few things needed to be readjusted, but now we've gelled as a unit. Everyone believes that we'll get back to the top. We're all giving it our all to achieve that goal – and it's a lot of fun."
Verstappen's decision to stay is a major boost for Red Bull, who are working to return to championship-winning ways after a period of dominance. The 28-year-old remains a cornerstone of the team's long-term project.
Nevertheless, the specter of retirement may continue to loom large. Verstappen's honesty serves as a reminder that even the most successful drivers can contemplate walking away. For now, though, he remains a central figure on the grid, much to the relief of fans worldwide.
