Alex Zanardi has passed away at the age of 59, with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali delivering a heartfelt tribute to one of motorsport’s most inspirational figures. The announcement followed confirmation from Zanardi’s family on May 1.
Zanardi’s career spanned multiple disciplines, including Formula 1 and major success in IndyCar, before achieving extraordinary results as a four-time gold medallist at the Paralympic Games. His journey became a benchmark for resilience and adaptability in elite sport.
Following the life-changing accident in 2001 that resulted in the loss of both legs, Zanardi returned to motorsport in various capacities, including programmes supported by BMW.
