A 39-year-old spectator from Yorke Peninsula, identified as Robbie, experienced a suspected lightning strike while walking on a spectator bridge over the circuit at The Bend, Australia, moments after a clap of thunder. The incident jolted the race day atmosphere and drew immediate attention from the paddock.
Robbie said he felt a flash of heat on his right arm and turned to his wife, saying, “I’ve been zapped.” In an interview with The Advertiser, he described the bizarre moment when the umbrella he was holding suddenly lifted on its own. “I was holding an umbrella in my right hand and it just started to rise into the air of its own accord like I was answering a question from a teacher,” he said. “I had no pain, just a cramp in my arm, but it wouldn’t stop shaking and I could hear it vibrating. I couldn’t fathom what had happened.”
The incident occurred just after a loud thunderclap, leaving the man’s hand “uncontrollably shaking.” A security guard escorted him to onsite paramedics before he was transferred to Murray Bridge Soldiers Memorial Hospital for further treatment. This event adds to the list of extreme weather incidents at racing events, but this time it directly affected a spectator.
The Bend, the circuit hosting the event, expressed deep concern and pledged to provide the man with free entry to next year’s event. “We wish him a full and speedy recovery,” read a statement. “The Bend has committed to providing him with a race day package for 2027, and we look forward to welcoming him back.” Robbie was at the venue with his family after winning an Ultimate Race Day Get Away competition run by the event.
Earlier, AirTouch 500 organizers announced they are offering 2027 tickets at 2026 prices for the next 10 days. This incident serves as a crucial reminder for organizers to enhance safety protocols, especially regarding sudden extreme weather. Nevertheless, the racing spirit remains alive, and support for Robbie continues to pour in from the motorsport community.
