South Africa Targets 2028-2029 Formula 1 Return Despite Rwanda Deal

The official confirmation naming Rwanda as the host of the upcoming African Formula 1 Grand Prix has triggered intense discussions across the global motorsport community regarding future calendar spots.

Rwanda secured a historic ten-year agreement to bring the pinnacle of motorsport back to the African continent for the first time since 1993, outpaced initial expectations.

South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie quickly addressed public narratives claiming that his nation had lost a direct head-to-head competition for the slot.

Offering warm congratulations to the Rwandan government, the leadership in Pretoria emphasized that the selection process was entirely earned through long-term preparation rather than a random draw.

"Voglio congratularmi con il Ruanda per aver ottenuto un posto in calendario di F1 nel prossimo decennio," stated McKenzie, clarifying that Rwanda initiated their comprehensive bid years prior.

Despite missing out on the initial wave, South African authorities are refusing to abandon their ultimate objective of rejoining the world championship matrix before the decade concludes.

"Ora dicono che il Ruanda ci ha battuto. No, il Ruanda non ci ha battuto – ha ribadito – noi sudafricani guardiamo ancora al 2028, al 2029," reinforced McKenzie, setting a clear sights on the 2028 and 2029 seasons.
