Oliver Solberg finally returned to the top step of the podium after an eight-month wait. His victory at Rally Chile was more than just a trophy—it was a statement of intent in the world championship fight.
Throughout the weekend, Solberg was flawless. He controlled the rally from the start and finished 16.6 seconds ahead of teammate Sebastien Ogier. He withstood pressure from Ogier and championship leader Elfyn Evans with composure.
“I’ve had the feeling that I’ve been able to fight for victories, but just a few small bits of bad luck have interrupted the chance to do it. But finally now everything went smoothly with the car, myself, everything,” Solberg said. “I could just focus on my thing and drive. It was an unbelievable weekend, really, from start to finish.”
The win lifted Solberg to third in the standings, 21 points behind Evans. He also closed the gap after Evans suffered a puncture on the penultimate stage and dropped to fifth. Evans still leads, but his advantage has shrunk dramatically. Ahead of Solberg, Sami Pajari sits second, 17 points off the lead.
After the rally, Solberg received important news during an interview with the WRC promoter’s head of communications. He had expressed hope that two rounds remained. “I’ll be disappointed if there’s only one rally left, especially now when I’m a little bit back in the fight,” he said. Moments later, the promoter confirmed there would be two more rounds. “Then it’s okay. Then I will do my very best,” Solberg said with a smile.
The remaining rounds are Sardinia and Saudi Arabia. However, strong rumors suggest the Saudi Arabian round may be canceled due to security concerns in the Middle East. Rally Catalunya is considered the leading candidate to replace it. If so, it would add a thrilling round in Europe.
With his growing maturity, Solberg is now a serious threat to his rivals. His consistency and calmness in Chile prove he is ready to fight until the end of the season. The title battle is heating up.
