Singapore GP 2026 F1 Stewards Explain Why Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri Escaped Penalties After Clash

A dramatic last-lap collision during the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix sprint race involving Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri immediately drew intense scrutiny from the race officials. The F1 stewards officially determined that both drivers contributed to the on-track incident, ruling that no further action or penalties were necessary for either competitor.

Following a post-race investigation, the stewards noted that Oscar Piastri had not anticipated his teammate launching an unexpected overtaking maneuver at a crucial part of the circuit. However, the Australian driver realized the sister car was positioned on the inside and attempted to leave a minimal amount of space as they navigated Turn 5. Meanwhile, Lando Norris firmly believed he spotted a legitimate opening to make an aggressive passing move in pursuit of a higher finishing position.

Explaining his perspective to the officials, Lando Norris stated that he saw an opportunity and argued that the front axle of his car was ahead of his teammate's mirror prior to the apex, giving him every right to expect racing room. As he approached the apex, the available space shrank significantly more than anticipated, forcing him to utilize the inside kerb and brake heavily before the inevitable contact occurred on the tarmac.

The stewards concluded that both drivers shared the blame for the incident, with neither individual being wholly or predominantly at fault for the late-race collision. Consequently, the decision was made to take no further action as aggressive positioning and delayed reactions culminated in the minor crash. Speaking to media outlets after the sprint, Lando Norris defended his move by insisting he simply went for a major gap and that racing hard is fundamentally what a grand prix weekend is all about.

Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri adopted a pragmatic view given the battle was merely for fourth and fifth place during a sprint race, though he expressed disappointment over the extra workload inflicted on the team mechanics to repair both cars. Outside the immediate team garage, rival drivers like Liam Lawson offered their thoughts after reviewing replays, suggesting that risking a last-lap incident for minor points might not ultimately be worth the trouble.
