Senna Agius is not just another name on the MotoGP grid. The 21-year-old Australian has traveled a long road from junior championships to finally earning a ride with KTM Tech3 for the 2027 season. His arrival marks a new era for Australia in the premier class, following in the footsteps of legends like Casey Stoner, Mick Doohan, and Wayne Gardner. Excitement is high, especially as he will be part of the first generation to ride 850cc machines and race at the new Adelaide Street Circuit.
Agius's journey to Europe began in the Idemitsu Moto4 Asia Cup. After showing promise, he moved to Europe in 2020 and spent two years in the Moto3 Junior World Championship. But the turning point came when he switched to the Moto2 European Championship in 2022. The bigger, more powerful bikes suited him perfectly. He immediately claimed two podiums in Portugal, then dominated with two wins in Catalunya. He ended that season as runner-up, but the following year was even more spectacular.
In 2023, Agius was unstoppable with five wins from the first six races. Despite missing Catalunya due to a highside crash, he bounced back with three more wins to clinch the Moto2 European Championship title. That performance earned him a step up to the Moto2 World Championship in 2024 with Intact GP. His debut season was solid, and the highlight came at the Australian GP where he scored his first podium in front of his home crowd. Although he finished 18th in the standings, the foundations were laid.
The 2025 season became Agius's breakout year. He opened with podiums in Thailand and Spain, then took his maiden win at the British GP. Another victory followed at Phillip Island, accompanied by the Australian national anthem. A 10th-place finish in the standings was a significant improvement, and all signs pointed to a promising 2026. Indeed, in 2026 he won in the USA and Spain, and podiumed in Hungary and the Netherlands. By mid-season, he sat third in the Moto2 standings, contending for the title.
His impressive performances caught the eye of Guenther Steiner, who offered him a MotoGP contract for 2027. Agius will join Tech3 alongside veteran Luca Marini, who will help him adapt. The Tech3 lineup will be completely new next season following the departures of Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales. The blend of Marini's experience and Agius's youthful energy is expected to tackle the new 2027 regulations.
Agius won't be the only rookie. David Alonso, Daniel Holgado, Izan Guevara, and Nicolo Bulega will also fight for Rookie of the Year honors. The competition is expected to be fierce, but Agius has valuable assets: a European Moto2 title and race wins in the world championship.
