Sebastien Ogier’s heavy crash at WRC Finland 2026 caused concern within the Hyundai camp, with Sporting Director Andrew Wheatley highlighting the strength of Rally1 machinery as an important factor in protecting crews during major impacts.
Ogier left the road at high speed on SS17 Västilä while leading the rally. For several minutes after the incident, the condition of Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia remained uncertain before it was confirmed that both were able to get out of the car and were taken to hospital in Tampere for precautionary examinations.
“I think everyone was thinking the same thing. We were just hoping that Seb and Julien were okay. Thankfully it looks like they’re on their way to hospital, and hopefully everything is fine,” Andrew Wheatley told Rallit.fi.
Once the crew’s condition became the primary concern, Wheatley also focused on the technical aspect of the accident. “My second thought was how fortunate it is that these cars are so strong. It was an incredibly heavy accident. It says a great deal about the work that has gone into improving safety over recent years,” he said.
For Wheatley, the ability of a Rally1 car to withstand such a major impact is significant beyond Ogier’s accident alone. He believes it demonstrates the progress made in safety standards and underlines why maintaining that development remains important for the future of the WRC.
Wheatley also contrasted Rally Finland with Rally Estonia two weeks earlier. Estonia passed with almost no major incidents over three days, while in Finland numerous crews have faced weather, crashes or other setbacks. He also warned that Sunday’s final two special stages remain highly demanding.
Although Estonia is also an extremely fast rally, Wheatley believes Finland presents a different level of challenge because of its roads and the importance attached to winning the event, particularly for Finnish drivers. Despite the incidents, he praised the competitiveness across the overall classification, WRC2 and Junior categories.
