George Russell admitted he was taken aback by the scale of performance gains delivered by key rivals during Sprint Qualifying for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2026, following major upgrade packages introduced by McLaren and Ferrari.
McLaren emerged as the benchmark, with Lando Norris securing Sprint pole position, while Oscar Piastri also featured strongly. Ferrari, bringing an extensive package including its “Macarena” rear wing concept, placed Charles Leclerc in contention near the front. Meanwhile, Russell’s team-mate Kimi Antonelli claimed a front-row start for Mercedes, highlighting a mixed picture for the team.
Russell himself could only manage the sixth-fastest time, finishing behind Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing. The result underlined the current competitive gap, particularly as Mercedes has yet to introduce its own major upgrade package, which is scheduled for deployment at the Canadian Grand Prix.
From a technical perspective, Russell identified tyre overheating as a key limitation, especially through Miami’s twisting middle sector. Elevated temperatures reduced grip levels and compromised car balance, making it difficult to extract consistent lap-time performance under demanding conditions.
The high ambient temperatures further narrowed the tyre operating window, requiring precise setup calibration to maintain stability. Factors such as load distribution, suspension characteristics, and aerodynamic balance played a critical role in managing degradation and preserving performance across a qualifying lap.
Russell also noted that Sprint races typically offer limited opportunities for recovery, particularly on circuits like Miami where overtaking can be constrained. As a result, start performance becomes a decisive factor, with track position likely to dictate race outcomes more heavily than outright pace alone.
The visible progress made by McLaren and Ferrari highlights the intensity of the development race under the 2026 regulations, where upgrade efficiency can rapidly reshape the competitive order. For Mercedes, the Miami weekend serves as a benchmark ahead of its own planned developments.
With the field tightening, the upcoming sessions will determine whether Mercedes can stabilise its position or continue to lose ground to its increasingly competitive rivals in the early phase of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
