Alan Permane, Racing Bulls Team Principal, has conceded that the arrangement for Liam Lawson to stand in for Isack Hadjar again at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix is less than ideal. However, the process has been smoother than expected, given the preparations were put in place well in advance.
"It's been easier this weekend. He knew there was a very big possibility of driving here," Permane told Sky F1. Hadjar reportedly did everything he could to recover, but the team had already lined up contingency plans for simulator sessions and flights. "Isack did everything he could to come back, but we had simulated sessions planned, so flights were in place, sim sessions in place, and we just had to push the button on them," Permane explained. The logistics had essentially been locked in before Hadjar's fitness was confirmed, leaving the team little room to alter course.
Competitive Implications and Lawson's Position
Permane was candid that the situation is uncomfortable, both competitively and for Lawson, who is on loan from Red Bull. "It's not ideal, it's certainly not ideal for us. Liam, whilst he's happy to help, he just says 'I want to get back in my car'," Permane said. Lawson has been made fully aware of his standing: "I tell him that the seat is there, ready for him as soon as Isack is fit and healthy."
Lawson's Technical Feedback on the Car
On the car's performance, Permane shared details of Lawson's technical feedback. "He's given us some feedback, and one of the things is that the car has a lot more load," Permane explained. "In the high speed, he really feels it. Certainly in Zandvoort, in those very high-speed corners, he said you could really feel the load." Yet this trait is a double-edged sword depending on corner type. "Ours is a little bit more friendly in the lower-speed mid-to-exit. It might not be as quick, I'm sure it isn't as quick, but I think it's a little bit easier to manage," Permane said, offering insight into how Racing Bulls' current package behaves across different corner speeds, courtesy of a driver with recent, direct comparison to the Red Bull car.
Lawson will continue to deputise until Hadjar is confirmed fit. Permane's remarks suggest that Hadjar's return will be dictated by his recovery progress rather than a fixed timeline.
