Tristan Pitts, a familiar name in Supercars paddocks, is making a comeback with his own team, Project Motorsport, set to compete in the Super2 Series. After years in the transport industry, Pitts is finally realizing his dream of owning a race team.
Pitts is no stranger to motorsport. He started as a tyre fitter and truck driver for Paul Morris' Super2 outfit, and later drove Supercars' operations transporter under Damien White in the early 2010s. Now, he's ready to take the next step.
Based in Yatala, South East Queensland, Project Motorsport is coming together. Pitts revealed that an agreement to lease ex-Triple Eight Holden Commodores is awaiting signature. "I always wanted to do this Super2 thing, it's just taken me a while to get in that place financially," Pitts told Speedcafe.
With his transport background, Pitts has no trouble setting up race trailers and infrastructure. He already has a workshop in Yatala for his trucks and a smaller shed next door for the race team. "What we really need to move forward is some paying drivers to come through with a big enough budget to support the series," he added.
Pitts aims to field two up-and-coming drivers but admits he can't be too picky. "If they've got a budget that can get them through the season, I can't baulk at those guys because I don't have any runs on the board," he said. However, he's also open to experienced drivers.
Regarding regulations, Pitts is aware that the ZB Commodores won't be eligible for Super2 once Gen3 arrives in 2028. But he has plans. The current owner of the ZBs will also have Camaros available. "My goal is to one day move into the main game, but I will also continue the Super2 cars and build a genuine footpath starting in Super2 and ending up in our own main game cars," he explained.
The current Super2 season has three rounds remaining, starting with the Bathurst 1000 on October 8-11. Project Motorsport's entry this season is not yet confirmed, but Pitts' steps show his seriousness in returning to racing.
