Oscar Piastri has been stripped of third place on the grid for Formula 1's Italian Grand Prix after impeding Liam Lawson during qualifying. The incident occurred late in Q2 as the McLaren driver exited the pits just as Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson began their final flying laps.
Red Bull deliberately ran out of sync to offer each other a slipstream. Lawson initially towed Verstappen, who then tried to return the favor to help Lawson reach Q3. Piastri managed to get out of Verstappen's way but, as he turned into the first chicane, he baulked Lawson, who lost valuable time he could not recover.
Chicane Dilemma: No Other Option
Summoned by the stewards after qualifying, Piastri explained that despite being warned about the approaching Red Bulls, he was unaware they were on push laps. Once he realized Verstappen was indeed going for a time, he did his best to move aside, but his positioning forced him to roll into the chicane and impede Lawson.
The stewards accepted that Piastri was left in a tricky spot with no other options but still imposed the standard three-place grid penalty. As a result, Piastri drops from third to sixth, promoting Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to the second row behind Pierre Gasly and George Russell.
Red Bull Consequences and Ferrari's Opportunity
Lawson's failure to reach Q3 left Verstappen without a partner to find a slipstream at a crucial moment. The team had hoped Lawson could act as a support, given he will start from the back due to an engine change penalty.
This penalty is a significant blow for McLaren, which had shown competitive pace. For Ferrari, however, it is a major boost in front of their home crowd. Starting from the second row, Leclerc and Hamilton now have a clear shot at a podium finish at Monza.
