Payton Westcott finally broke her duck. The American driver delivered a stunning performance in the F1 Academy Reverse Grid Race at Zandvoort to claim her first victory. The paddock erupted; after weeks of near misses, Westcott could finally smile wide in parc ferme.
Her season has been a roller coaster. Two additional podiums and 49 points are in the bag, but there have also been painful weekends like Silverstone, where she finished P14 in the Reverse Grid Race and P11 in the Feature Race. That makes this win in the Netherlands all the more special.
Starting from pole after Zoe Florescu was disqualified certainly helped. Yet this victory was not just about luck. Westcott showed remarkable composure, even as pressure mounted from Alba Larsen behind.
A Weight Off Her Shoulders
After the race, Westcott admitted feeling immense relief. "I feel great. It was a good race from my end," she told F1 Academy. "I managed to pull a gap in the first lap, and then we had the Safety Car after that, so I was a bit disappointed because I thought I had a nice gap."
Despite the restart being a tricky moment, Westcott thrived. She built another gap and let Nina Gademan and Larsen battle behind. "I saw Alba got around Nina, and then it was just me focusing on my race in front, trying to make a gap," she explained.
Late in the race, Larsen closed in, threatening a fight for the lead. But Westcott held her nerve. "Alba got pretty close at one point, but I kept going and kept focusing on myself. It's incredible," she said. "I feel so relieved to have won a race in F1 Academy. It takes a big weight off my shoulders. I really did it to prove to myself that I could do it and I'm so happy."
This victory is a major turning point in Westcott's campaign. With renewed confidence, she is poised to become a force to be reckoned with in the remaining rounds.
