Oscar Piastri Pays Heavy Price for Missing 2026 Hungarian F1 FP1

Oscar Piastri paid a significant price for missing FP1 at the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix as he struggled to adapt to unexpectedly low-grip conditions at the Hungaroring.

McLaren handed Piastri’s car to Leonardo Fornaroli for Friday’s opening session as part of the mandatory requirement to run rookie drivers in four practice sessions during the season. The decision cost Piastri an important hour of track time.

Team principal Andrea Stella believes the primary factor behind Piastri’s difficulties was his absence from FP1 rather than the delayed arrival of McLaren’s upgrade package. The surface and wind conditions were substantially different from the traditionally high-grip characteristics of the circuit.

“The main impact on Oscar’s weekend was, I think, the fact that he missed FP1 rather than not having the new components,” Andrea Stella said.

Piastri returned to the car in FP2 but continued with the older specification. He only received the upgraded components on Saturday morning, although Stella does not believe that difference caused him to trail Lando Norris in qualifying.

Stella explained that drivers needed additional time to adjust their rhythm and mindset when the grip level changed unpredictably from corner to corner. The difficult surface and gusty winds contributed to an unusually high number of mistakes throughout the weekend.

“This year, it was pretty much a bet in every single corner. We have seen a very uncharacteristic number of mistakes this weekend, which is just down to the tarmac and the wind conditions,” he said.

Piastri completed qualifying in fifth after being unable to set a final lap. Penalties for Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli subsequently promoted him to third on the provisional starting grid.

That position keeps Piastri involved in the battle for victory, but he enters the race with less accumulated knowledge of the car and circuit than Norris. McLaren must now use its upgraded package, tyre management and race strategy to compensate for the practice time he lost.
