The Formula 1 race weekend at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez turned into a nightmare for Oscar Piastri after the McLaren driver suffered a shock elimination in Q2. This disappointing result abruptly ended his remarkable streak of consecutive Q3 appearances stretching back two years.
Having started the practice sessions with highly promising pace, the Australian driver felt confident of securing a strong grid position. However, disaster struck when he fitted a fresh set of soft tyres for his final run in Q2, experiencing a sudden and baffling loss of rear grip.
"I felt like in Q1 we had plenty of pace," Piastri told Sky Sports F1. "Just the new tyres, I mean I barely improved. So that was the biggest issue. In normal circumstances we should have been plenty comfortable enough."

He further expressed his frustration over the unexpected handling changes. "I don’t know what changed on that new set of tyres, but I just had no grip at all," he lamented following a tense qualifying hour.
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella addressed the recurring inconsistencies plaguing the MCL40 this season. He admitted that the car's peculiar behavior often catches the drivers off guard when they attempt to push beyond normal limits.
"The car though at some stage kind of exhibited the inconsistencies that we see this year with the MCL40, and this caught Oscar in Q2 and Lando in Q3," Stella explained. "At some stage when the drivers try to push that little bit more than ideal, because they feel this grip is available, actually the grip disappears."
Teammate Lando Norris shared similar frustrations after failing to convert his earlier speed into a front-row start, ultimately qualifying sixth following a late mistake in Q3.
