The Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix qualifying session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez brought intense drama to the Mercedes garage. Leading charger George Russell openly admitted that a crucial strategic choice made by the team ultimately cost him the opportunity to secure pole position.
The Briton finished second on the timesheets behind his former teammate and current Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton. While acknowledging that the Scuderia's smaller turbo combined with high altitude placed them as favourites, Russell believed his outright single-lap pace was good enough to fight for the top spot.
Speaking in the post-qualifying press conference, Russell explained that carrying an extra lap's worth of fuel for a preparation lap proved to be the decisive factor that kept him away from the ultimate glory.

"Yeah, that was probably the biggest thing that I changed," Russell told media including Motorsport Week. "I saw Lewis and Charles, and Max as well, they weren't doing the prep lap. We were doing prep laps. Just getting the temperature of the tyre is quite challenging."
"My gut told me we could do it on lap one without the preparation. But the team wanted to do the prep, so we ended up carrying the fuel for an extra lap. So it's such a small number, but it's bigger than the gap to pole. So it's obviously, you always think retrospectively, if only we had the one lap of fuel rather than the extra lap of fuel like we had, we could have been on pole."
Despite the narrow miss caused by the tactical fuel load, George Russell expressed immense relief to be back fighting at the sharp end of the grid after navigating a challenging run of performances.
